Kelly Donegan – Botanic Gardens

Kelly Donegan --6

Kelly Donegan is on a serious fitness buzz this weather. She is training hard and eating healthy…. basically everything I don’t do. We shot for the Irish Sun as part of a week-long fitness feature that Kelly was doing for the paper. It consisted of a number of days shooting for her in different locations and with different photographers. This particular section was for bikini’s and we shots it in the Botanic Gardens in Dublin.

Kelly Donegan --4

It was a fantastic day when shooting in the Botanic Gardens….. well it started off raining but the sun came out and lite up the place along with increasing the temperature.  The humidity and temperature are the first thing you notice when walking into the giant greenhouse.

The team on the day consisted of a few regulars and one new member. Clothes styling and Hair styling were performed by the Nicole and Shauna Spain duo. Make-up Artist Sharleen Collins was there to make sure that Kelly looked great. Finally, videographer Richard Finlay was there to get footage for the project. He was shooting Kelly at all the various stages of this feature and put together a nice little video as seen below. Check out his webiste here: http://www.brideandgroom.ie/

Flutterby Fashion Styling Shoot

130620--392

I had a busy day shooting with  Nicole & Shauna Spain, the Flutterby  team recently. The idea of the shoot was to get shots for Shauna’s Hairstyling business along with shots for the Flutterby Fashion styling business. Shauna organised the shoot and get it all sorted. The models Holly Keating, Niamh Cullen and Sinead Duffy came down to pose for the shots. Aimee Connolly came down also to do the make-up for the 3 girls. Lots of people in studio, lots of fun…. as per usual.

I had worked with Holly and Nimah before, always a pleasure working with them. It was the first time that I had met the Andrea Roche model, Sinead Duffy. Sinead has since gone on to win the competition for Miss Irish Sun 2013. You can check out that shoot here ( coming soon).

The theme for this shoot was colour. The clothes are colourful, the background is colourful, the lollipop was colorful…. it was all fun and colorful. It was good to do something like this for  a change. I am really making the most of the new backdrops anyway. You will see a bit more heavy use of the colour in a few more shoots to come before I calm stop using them as heavy.

Jane Lyons – Date with Fate

130218--093

A few months ago, you might have seen a show on RTE2 called “Date with Fate”. It was a pilot for a new kind of dating show that shows you how your potential suitors would look when they are a lot older. Tipperary girl Jane Lyons was the female interest in that show. She has the tough job of picking a suitor from judging them years in the future.  The blurb goes as follows:

“Imagine you were single and you had the unique opportunity to take a look in a romantic crystal ball and see how life might possibly look 30 years down the track with a potential partner? It’s the ultimate speed date. Well RTÉ Two is giving one singleton that unique opportunity, in Date With Fate, the new dating show that takes the chance out of romance.

130218--050

The shoot was a press shoot for the Irish Sun to coincide with the show airing. Unfortunately I don’t think the show was a success and it didn’t get past the pilot stage…. but at least we got to shoot with it 🙂 . The Flutter On By Styling  (http://www.flutteronby.com/)  Team of Nicole and Shauna Spain can take the credit for pulling this shoot together. They organised Jane, the styling and Make-Up artist, Emma-Rose Howard. Some of the lingerie was from Change Lingerie and some was from Dolls & Dreams.

130218--020

The dresses for the shoot were supplied by Glitterati Boutique. They are a dress hire company based in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, which is just out the road from me. So it was great to be working with local people on shoots. The dress above looks stunning on Jane. We ran out side the studio for a quick shot while the Sun came out to play for a few minutes. Being Ireland and being early February though, it was very cold and we only stayed out for less than 5 minutes.

130218--037

It was great working with Jane.  As well as being stunning, she is also currently a model with Primadonnas Agency, so that made the shoot very easy. The rests of the team were great also. Shauna was her usual fantastic self with Hair and Nicole worked her styling magic.  I have worked with Nicole and Shauna a few times now on various shoots, but it was the first time I worked with Emma-Rose and she done a great job.

If you want to check out the show, it is available to view on YouTube. You can find a trailer for it below 🙂

Faye Rooney in Studio

Here is another well overdue shoot to appear on the blog. The blog is well behind these days. The plus side is that it means that I am too busy to shooting and editing to be able to put up posts. Although I don’t put up every shoot that I do, I do try to get the majority of them up. So here it goes.

I recently had the  pleasure of shooting with Faye Rooney (Miss Wright Venue 2011) again recently. Faye came for some new shots. I first shot Faye back in  October 2011 when she was the Miss Wright Venue. She is now an employee of the Venue, looking after the VIP Penthouse.

I cracked out the Orbis Ring Flash ( www.orbisflash.com ) for some of these shots. I haven’t used it in a while so I said why not. The orbis has been pretty good to me in the past. Not the cheapest accessory, but it is great quality. It is super  strong and very well made. It has taken a few knocks from me now and hasn’t got a mark on it.

In terms of a showing you a lighting setup shot with the Orbis….. there is not much to show as it is on the camera. The light comes from the same direction each time. The only thing that you can really vary to get different effects is the distance your subject is from the light and the distance your subject is from the background.

Nicole Spain from Flutterby Fashion Styling was at hand to source the cloths for this look and the other looks that we shoot on the day. Amy MaGuire ( http://amymcguiremakeupartist.blogspot.ie ) provided her fantastic make-up skills for the day.

Aisling’s Make-Over

Here is a small selection of shots from a recent shoot with Aisling.

The job of a photographer in my niche is to create beautiful images of you, the person in front of my lens. It is not enough to capture the physical beauty, but also to draw out the inner beauty and confidence that  is buried inside everyone, some people have it buried deeper than others. Once this confidence is exposed and a connection is made with the camera, the result is beautiful. This is what it is all about for me and it is what I strive to achieve. It’s what separates an image that is just nice from one that captivating. A small change makes a big difference.

If there is one message that I want to try to get across to the masses, it would be that you do not need to “be a model” to book & experience your own  photoshoot. You don’t have to be signed with an agency… you don’t have to be entering a beauty pageant….. You don’t need any excuse to have beautiful pictures of yourself.

20120323--170

Some seem to think that if you have professional photos of you on FaceBook where you are looking beautiful and glamorous, that you have ambitions to be a model. This not always the case…… although for some it can lead to an unexpected calling. There is nothing wrong with wanting the experience, the attention and the empowering feeling what comes along with getting a make-over and some fantastic photographs. A photograph captures a moment forever, so why not capture a moment with you looking your best.

Aisling booked a shoot with me some time ago. She had done some photoshoots before and she really enjoys the experience of a photoshoot. She is a confident, beautiful woman who is not shy about letting her photos be seen. She had an idea of what she wanted in terms of styling and she got in touch with Nicole Spain from Flutter On by Styling to come down and style her. Nicole and Aisling  discussed the look that Aisling was wanting before hand and Nicole went out to source the cloths, or bring bits to the shoot that she already had.

aisling-diptych

Aisling has also worked with Julie Caulfield before and loved her make-up and hair styling and organised for Julie to be there on the day. I have worked with and shoot Julie a few times now, it’s always a pleasure working with her. She did a great job with Aisling as expected.

The shoot went great though, we managed to get through all the looks we wanted. Aisling booked a Full Portfolio Shoot, to that got her 8 photos retouched and printed, but she loved so many that she ordered more. The average is between 10-15 images that people order. That is why I try to under promise and over deliver when it comes to the end product.

Rebecca Maguire – Miss Wright Venue 2012

The “Miss Wright Venue” title is a highly contested accolade. It is one of the most popular entry paths into the Miss Ireland. The 2011 title holder was Faye Fooney and she represented the Night Club  very well, so well she is now an employee in fact. The Belfast Beauty Rebecca Maguire was crowned Miss Wright Venue 2012 last month.

Rebecca is no stranger to the world of pageants or fashion. She is a hot favorite to win the 2012 Miss Ireland title as she came second last year after been beaten by Holly Carpenter. It was a tough contest last year as both were great contenders, but only one could win. This could be Rebecca’s year though.

I sponsored a photoshoot for the winner of Miss Wright Venue 2012. The shoot styling was also sponsored by Nicole Spain of Flutter On By Fashion Styling. Go check the out if you are looking to do a styling course. The Hair sponsor for the shoot was Shauna Spain Hair Styling. Go check out here great deals on a blow dry at the moment. Aine Cahill was on hand to provide her Make-Up artistry skills. Aine a graduate from LA Make-Up Academy did a great job. Finally, the dresses were provided by The Ivory Closet Dress Hire Limerick. The Ivory Closet are a popular name these days when it comes to quality dress hire.

rebecca-tripdeck

I was delighted to meet Rebecca and her Mum (Hey Charlotte) and Auntie Karen in the Wright Venue Penthouse for the craic at the after party. We started to plan the shoot straight away to get the ball rolling on it. The aim for the shoot was to shoot some elegant shots with Rebecca modeling the fantastic dresses from The Ivory Closet along with some classic swim ware shoots as well as a lingerie look. Time was limited for the shoot and we had a lot to get through. I think we managed to cover the plan fairly well though 🙂

Rebecca looks great in these swimsuit and lingerie shots though, as I am sure you will agree. You can check these shoots out in the Irish Sun Paper .

120324--207
We shot on location at the Wright Venue…. well Rebecca is the Misses of the place after all 🙂 . The WV is a fantastic venue and top class club. It has some lovely features and unique places that make for a great shooting location / background. However, here in lies the problem. It is now hard to shoot there while doing so in a creative and new way. The last thing a photographer want is to be shooting a model in the same way as 2 or 4 other photographers. That is a common problem when shooting at popular locations….. how do you make it look different? Well in this case, it’s not so much about making it look different persay but trying to shoot from either a different angle or by using different lighting.

For example, the Scarface room is a cool private VVIP part of the venue. It has been shot by so many different photographers with so many different models in many different ways… its hard to get a unique take on it. Coupled with that the time limit that we had ( there was a fashion show on later), it’s often under pressure that the solutions come about. My solution was to use my Magic light a.K.a the Orbis Ring Flash. Check out all the black and white shots to see the effect of that.

The Miss Ireland Final is on the 28th of April, so there is not long left for it now. I want to wish Rebecca the best of Luck with it…. I know she will do great.

Rachel Wallace – The Hotel Room Shoot

Rachel Wallace-1

Rachel Wallace is back on the blog for her second outing. Rachel is another one of my subjects becoming a regular on my blog. Although this is just our second shoot,  we had our third a few days after this one and the fourth is in the works. She is tied with Alyson who is  heading for shoot no. 4 also.

Score keeping aside, there was a business end to this shoot, and indeed all my shoots with Rachel. The brief for this shoot had two parts. This shoot was  filmed for parts of Rachels bio/introduction piece on ICA book camp, which will be on RTE next month. The first part of the brief was to stage a shoot for TV.  The shoot images were also used for a spread in the Irish sun which was Published on Feb 23rd, that was the second part of the brief.

Rachel is fantastic to work with. A re-cap of Rachel’s story can be found in the post on our first shoot HERE. She is still with Assets and going strong, getting plenty of work. The ICA book camp should be a real boost to Rachel’s profile once it is aired and no doubt she will go great in the final.

This shoot was in the Bewley’s Hotel in Ballsbridge. They kindly lent us a room for a few hours for the TV crew to do an interview and for us to shoot for a bit. This is the second time I have shoot here, the first time being over a year ago with for my Day with Hannah.

Rachel Wallace-15

This shoot was styled by Nicole Spain of Flutterby Fashion Styling. This was my first time to work with Nicole directly. She styled the shoot for Lisa and Faye before but unfortunately could not attend that shoot. It was great working with Nicole on this shoot. Penny’s supplied the lingerie, which looked great on Rachel. The hair extensions were by Hotloxs Hair Extensions and styled by the great team at Blow Salons.

Ironically, the images that you see here are none of the images that you will see being shot on the TV show. After Rachel finished her 15mins interview, we had to get cracking on a shoot…. or pretend to shoot so the camera can get some footage of a shoot in progress. I didnt really set up lights proper or anything. We were just shooting for the sake of shooting…. so you have been warned in advice of watching the shot and thinking that they are crap shots :).

So the shoot had two briefs, a shoot for the sake of a shoot and a shoot for getting some press images. Upon arriving at the hotel early with my gear to recon the location, I had the sneaky suspicion that the room that was organise would be the standard hotel room that they have. Under normal circumstances, this would be a fine room but it is just too small for a photo shoot, let alone a TV interview. Lights, sound man, camera man, director, assistance, Nicole, Rachel and my self, it was going to get cramped.

Rachel Wallace-8
I got the key card and went up to the room and my suspicions about a small room were realised. I didn’t unpack any gear until the TV crew arrived. I was hoping the the producer who organise the room initially would be able to see if there was a larger room available, and so their was. We moved a few floors up and we now had a bigger room with more space.

So the TV crew got into prep mode and started to set up the camera, hot lights etc etc. I set up my Elinchrom lights and softboxes to be used as some props in the background…. Rachel was supposed to be on the set of a photoshoot after all. The Elinchroms worked great…. apart from the cooling fan that kicked in every so often. The noise from the tiny fans was enough to put off the sound in the interview. Luckily they cool down pretty quick, so after a minute of it being off, we turned be back on and it was good to go again for another few minutes.

Rachel Wallace-2

Once the TV crew got that they needed…… which was mostly some random photos been taking and some useless direction by me, they were off. Once they were gone, that left Rachel, Nicole and my self to work away and start getting our stuff done. Nicole had a selection of items for us to shoot. Some of those included lingerie from Pennny’s and t-shirts from another company.

Rachel Wallace-5
Lighting wise, there was nothing new or ground breaking here. I did how ever crack out the Orbis Ring Flash out of hibernation. I haven’t used it since Aug of last year. I used it for all the shots of Rachel on the bed as I wanted to give it a try….. no other reason really. I could have used the other lights that I had with me, such as the Elinchroms. I suck with the Orbis anyway for this look. It was armed with a 580-II and triggered via E-TTL cord. I was shooting in E-TTL move with +1 EV Flash compensation.  This is needed as I find that I need to up the juice a bit of the flash when using the Orbis.

Thats all for now, any comments or questions, holla below.

Faye Rooney – Miss Wright Venue 2011

Following on from an earlier post with Lisa Nolan,  Faye Rooney was the other model member of the team for the day. Faye is currently signed with Assets Model Agency and has had a great year. She is the current Miss Wright Venue and represented the Nightclub in the 2011 Miss Ireland contest. She also had lots of other strings to her bow.

111012--214

Faye looks fantastic here in this lingerie. As we were chatting during the shoot, she mentioned how she done some Irish dancing back in her day. Her dancing background could be a factor to her great shape. It is always easy photographing any one with some dancing background. They are natural posers ans usually have great shape and form.

111012--451

To recap on the team. Faye & Lisa were the models. The talented Amy McGuire was also with us for the day as our make-up artist. Amy runs PeekaBoo Make-up Artistry, which is based in Riverchapel, Co. Wexford. Check out her FaceBook Page. Finally, the ladies were styled by Nicole Spain of Flutterby Fashion Styling. unfortunately Nicole could not make it down for the shoot, but she sent the girls down fully loaded  and ready to go  🙂

Lisa Nolan in Studio

Lisa Nolan --4

July 2010 was the first time I met Lisa and worked with her for the first time. Back then, she was one of the first models that I shot with. See those shots here . She was with BScene the agency back then. But Bscene have moved away from model management now and Lisa is now signed with Assets Model Agency and is doing great for her self.

We had a great team on the day. Lisa came down to my studio with fellow Assets girl Faye Rooney who was getting shots done also (next post) . The talented Amy McGuire was also with us for the day as our make-up artist. Amy runs PeekaBoo Make-up Artistry, which is based in Riverchapel, Co. Wexford. Check out her FaceBook Page. Finally, the ladies were stylied by Nicole Spain of Flutterby Fashion Styling. Unfortunatly Nicole could not make it down for the shoot, but she sent the girls down fully loaded  and ready to go  🙂

As usual, it was another fun day’s shooting. Both girls wanted some new shots for their books along with some shots of them together that we hoped would get published. Lisa and Faye are great craic together. They are good friends and do work together a lot. They are so much craic together infact that, near the end of the shoot, it was tough trying to get the last few shots due to the out break of uncontrollable laughter syndrome 🙂
